Doirani lake is located in the area where Greece shares boarders with FYROM and extends over 42.5 km2 out of which 15.6 km2 belong to Greece. Its main source of water are the small streams which fall into it.
Doirani village is located at the lake shore and is an ideal place for fishing. In the area dominates the monument created in honor of Doirani battle, as well as other sights.
The Municipality of Doirani in cooperation with Goulandri Museum constructed the Lake Museum of Doirani, housed in a modern building next to the lake.
Visitors in Doirani will feel the tranquility of the scenery, see its historic route through time, and enjoy the magical sunset that turns the lake red as the sun dives in it. Its crystal clear waters are ideal for fishing all year long.
Scientists have discovered 18 species of fish in the lake including carp, Som catfish, roach and perch and approximately 36 bird species, such as pygmy cormorant (Phalarocorax pygmeus) and Dalmatian pelican (Pelecanus Crispus) which have been proclaimed as endangered species.
It is a wetland of great national and international importance (Ramsar Convention). It sustains a rich population of birds in regards to the number and variety, including rare and endangered species. The wetland is extremely important as a feeding area for predatory birds which nest in the nearby forests, as a hibernation point and intermediary stop for migrating birds as well as an area for reproduction for a large number of birds. The growing biological productivity, the existence of rare plants (Marsillea quadrifolia, Utricularia vulgaris and other) and animal species in the area and the forestal ecosystems which surround it, increases its ecological value even more. In the running waters of the area, around the village of Agistro, there is a population of wild trout, Salmo macrostigma, which is threatened by the neighbouring cultivation of foreign trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss.
